The Korea Communications Commission announced on the 8th that the partial amendment of the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Act (Broadcasting Culture Promotion Act) and the partial amendment of the Korea Educational Broadcasting System Act (EBS Act) will come into effect on the 9th. This follows the decision made at the Cabinet meeting on the 2nd.
The amended two laws contain the following details: ▲an increase in the number of directors of the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Association and the Korea Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) and diversification of the nomination entities ▲the establishment of a Presidential Candidate Recommendation Committee.
With the implementation of this amended law, the number of directors of the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Association and EBS will be expanded from the previous 9 to 13. The National Assembly, broadcasting company employees, the viewer committee, and broadcasting and media academic societies can recommend directors. The Broadcasting Culture Promotion Association will have directors recommended by lawyer organizations, while the EBS will have directors recommended by the Minister of Education, the Education Superintendents Council, and education-related organizations.
In addition, a Presidential Candidate Recommendation Committee will be established at the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Association and EBS. The board of directors will finalize the president candidate through a special majority vote requiring more than two-thirds of the total attendance.
As a follow-up measure to the recent amendments to the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Act and the Korea Educational Broadcasting System Act, the Korea Communications Commission plans to establish rules concerning ▲the entities recommending directors (broadcasting and media academic societies, lawyer organizations, education-related organizations) and ▲the criteria for public opinion survey organizations (related to the composition of the Presidential Candidate Recommendation Committee).
