Apple plans to launch its own artificial intelligence (AI)-based web search tool next year, Bloomberg News reported on the 3rd (local time). According to sources, Apple is developing a new system internally under the code name 'World Knowledge Answers', which is expected to be integrated with the AI voice assistant Siri.
Apple is also considering adding this technology to the web browser Safari and the iPhone home screen search feature Spotlight. Sources noted that this project is part of the long-delayed overhaul of Siri, aimed for release in the spring of next year.
The key is to make Siri and the operating system a gateway for information retrieval across the internet. Similar to the AI overview of ChatGPT and Google Search, competition in the global search market is inevitable. However, sources indicated that a significant portion of the underlying technology is likely to be provided by Google. In fact, Apple has reportedly reached an official agreement to evaluate and test Google's AI models to enhance Siri this week.
The new search experience will provide various results on one screen, going beyond simple text answers to include photos, videos, and local attractions. An AI-based system will also be equipped to summarize results quickly and accurately. Currently, Siri can handle basic questions but relies on external technologies like ChatGPT for complex knowledge searches.
Apple plans to significantly overhaul the new Siri to utilize personal data and on-screen content for more precise handling of user requests and to allow for sophisticated voice control of devices. Initially, the upgraded Siri was set to be released at the end of last year, but it has been delayed, with a strong possibility of being unveiled early next year.
