The Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Dispute Mediation Committee) announced on the 4th that it had merged three group dispute mediation applications filed against SK Telecom (hereinafter referred to as SKT) into a single case and resumed the mediation process on the 28th of last month. The Dispute Mediation Committee will recruit additional applicants for two weeks until the 18th.
Previously, the Dispute Mediation Committee had suspended two group dispute mediation cases (June 19) and one case (July 31) as the Personal Information Protection Commission (hereinafter referred to as the Personal Information Protection Commission) started an investigation into the SKT data leak incident on April 22. Following this, the Personal Information Protection Commission decided on August 27 to impose penalties on SKT, allowing the previously suspended procedures to resume.
Users who have received notifications of personal information leaks from SKT or confirmed the leaks through SKT's inquiry service can additionally participate in this group dispute mediation process. Applications for participation can be submitted to the Dispute Mediation Committee via email or postal mail.
The Dispute Mediation Committee plans to verify the eligibility of participants and notify them within 10 days after the application deadline on September 18. Furthermore, it will prepare a mediation proposal and notify the parties within 60 days after the application deadline, and if either party does not accept it, the mediation will not be established. Individual dispute mediation applications will also be processed in a merged manner.
Acting Chair of the Dispute Mediation Committee Woo Ji-sook noted, "As the penalty procedure against SKT by the Personal Information Protection Commission has been finalized, we will quickly prepare a mediation proposal to proceed with the procedures for compensating the affected information subjects."
