SK hynix maintained its position as the global leader in the DRAM market for the second consecutive quarter, surpassing Samsung Electronics, based on its strength in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market in the first quarter.
According to market research firm TrendForce on the 2nd, global DRAM market revenue for the second quarter of this year reached $31.63 billion (approximately 44.12 trillion won), marking a 17.1% increase compared to the previous quarter. TrendForce analyzed that this growth was driven by rising DRAM prices, robust increase in shipment volumes, and growing demand for HBM.
Looking at the performance by company, SK hynix recorded revenue of $12.23 billion (approximately 17.6 trillion won) in the second quarter, a 25.8% increase from the previous quarter. Its market share rose from 36% in the first quarter to 38.7%, an increase of 2.7 percentage points.
While the average selling price (ASP) increase was limited due to the rise in low-cost DDR4 memory shipments, greater-than-expected shipment volumes drove performance. This allowed SK hynix to maintain its leading position for the second quarter in a row after surpassing Samsung Electronics for the first time in the first quarter.
Samsung Electronics' revenue for the second quarter reached $10.35 billion (approximately 14.44 trillion won), marking a 13.7% increase compared to the previous quarter. Its market share decreased from 33.7% to 32.7%, a decline of 1 percentage point. This was analyzed as a result of only slight increases in both ASP and shipment volumes.
Micron, in third place, recorded revenue of $6.95 billion (approximately 9.7 trillion won) in the second quarter despite an increase in shipment volumes, as ASP fell, resulting in only a 5.7% increase compared to the previous quarter. Its market share dropped from 24.3% to 22%, a decrease of 2.3 percentage points.
