Arm is supplying intellectual property (IP) platforms at the forefront of industries where artificial intelligence (AI) is applied, such as data centers, mobile, and automotive. As we enter the AI era and power consumption increases significantly, we will build an ecosystem that allows our partners to establish AI infrastructure with minimal power.
Mohamed Awad, senior vice president at Arm, said during the keynote speech at the 'SMARTCLOUD SHOW 2025' held on the 27th at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul, themed 'AI and the Future.' Awad delivered a lecture on 'The infinite possibilities of AI: Redefining infrastructure for a new era.' He oversees Arm's infrastructure division.
Arm is a powerhouse in the intellectual property (IP) market, which is the backbone of semiconductor design. More than 90% of the semiconductors produced worldwide are designed based on Arm IP, including the application processors (AP) that serve as the brains of smartphones. Semiconductor corporations worldwide, including Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, and NVIDIA, utilize Arm's technology. Notably, using Arm's IP is considered effective for achieving maximal power-efficient performance.
Awad noted, "Arm's technology is being applied across all sectors, including mobile, automotive, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and data centers, and can be viewed as being at the forefront of industries where AI technology is needed."
Arm explained that implementing low power in the AI era is crucial. Awad stated, "It took 1 million gigabytes (GB) of power to train OpenAI's GPT-4," adding, "That is equivalent to about 200 million songs." He emphasized, "Due to the high power consumption, we must not neglect efforts to improve performance per watt, a power efficiency metric," and noted that corporations building data centers, such as NVIDIA, Amazon, and Google, have also jumped in to develop technology that enhances performance with the least possible power.
Arm stated that it would take the lead in building an ecosystem for low-power infrastructure based on the low-power technologies it possesses. Awad mentioned, "Amazon, Google, Alibaba, and Microsoft are all utilizing the platform provided by Arm to develop semiconductors," and added, "Building infrastructure for the AI era cannot be achieved solely through the efforts of individual software and hardware corporations. We will assist our partners in reducing time and expense through Arm's IP platform."
Arm explained that it is accelerating collaborations with Korean corporations. Arm is developing next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor platforms based on 2 nanometer (nm) process technology in collaboration with Rebellions, a fabless semiconductor design startup, Samsung Electronics' foundry division, and ADTechnology, a design house.
Awad stated, "A project for developing an AI platform using Arm's IP is in progress," adding, "This is just one of many cases and will show that the ecosystem being built by Arm has a perfect system for semiconductor development."
