KT's quantum key distribution (QKD) technology has been applied to equipment that has become the first domestically manufactured device to pass security verification by the National Intelligence Service.
KT announced on the 25th that a specialized device manufactured by transferring its self-developed quantum key distribution technology to the domestic transmission equipment manufacturer Coweaver has obtained security certification from the National Intelligence Service. Prior to this, it also underwent security functionality tests by institutions under the Ministry of Science and ICT, such as the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS) and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).
Quantum key distribution is a technology that fundamentally blocks hacking or eavesdropping during information transmission by utilizing the principles of quantum mechanics. It creates a state that simultaneously has both 0 and 1 information using the phenomenon of 'quantum superposition' and maximizes security by generating and transferring quantum keys. KT noted, 'This is regarded as the most difficult technology in quantum cryptography networks and the strongest security solution,' adding, 'It signifies that we have created a quantum cryptography infrastructure ecosystem based on pure domestic technology.'
This equipment uses a 1:6 method, connecting one central node, which plays a key role in the entire network, to six distributed regional nodes connected to the central node to form quantum encryption. This allows for more than a 30% reduction in expenses compared to the existing 1:1 method of equipment.
National and public institutions must undergo security suitability verification to safely protect the national information and communication network for their information protection systems or network equipment. Quantum encryption communication equipment is also included in this. KT holds 15 core patents related to quantum encryption communication.
KT stated, 'We are transferring the quantum encryption communication-related technologies that we have developed and hold to various leading domestic technology corporations in addition to Coweaver and are collaborating closely.' It added, 'With the acquisition of security suitability certification, we can now provide quantum encryption communication services to national and public institutions easily and reliably.'
