Meta Platforms has embarked on a major restructuring of its AI division to lead the competition for the development of 'superintelligence,' or artificial intelligence that surpasses human capabilities. The genius developer Alexander Wang, who was recently recruited at a considerable cost, will be at the center of this overhaul and will directly oversee the development of large language models (LLMs).
According to Bloomberg on the 20th (local time), Meta has reorganized its existing structure established for superintelligence research into four specialized teams: ▲the 'TBD Lab' dedicated to large language models ▲'FAIR,' which has been engaged in pure AI research for over a decade ▲the 'Product and Applied Research Team' responsible for commercializing research results ▲and the 'Infrastructure Team' that supports all of this.
The most notable organization is the 'TBD Lab' led by Alexander Wang, the founder of Scale AI. Meta has invested $14.3 billion in his company in efforts to recruit him. The Product and Applied Research Team, which will apply research results to actual services, will be led by Nat Friedman, who previously served as CEO of GitHub.
This organizational restructuring stems from the common recognition by CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Alexander Wang that the era of superintelligence is near. Wang reportedly emphasized building an organization focused on research, products, and infrastructure, stating in an internal memo, 'Superintelligence is approaching.' CEO Zuckerberg has also recently noted that 'the development of superintelligent AI has become a reality on the horizon.'
Meta continues to make aggressive investments, offering substantial compensation packages to recruit top AI talent from competitors. Meanwhile, there were no separate personnel reductions during this restructuring process.
