Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is set to launch its first smart glasses equipped with a display next month, Bloomberg reported on the 18th (local time). Known as 'Hypernova,' Meta's next-generation smart glasses will be unveiled at the annual product announcement event 'Connect' to be held next month.
Meta is currently selling smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban. The next-generation smart glasses are said to be differentiated from existing products by their built-in display. These smart glasses come with an artificial intelligence (AI) voice assistant feature and can apply augmented reality (AR) technology through the display. Various information can be viewed via the right lens display, and functionalities can be implemented through a wristband.
The price of the new smart glasses reportedly starts at $800 (1.11 million won). This is significantly lower than the initial expectation of exceeding $1,000. Bloomberg noted, 'Meta lowered the price to increase demand,' stating, 'This is a strategy commonly used when launching new products.'
Meta unveiled a prototype of a new augmented reality (AR) smart glasses called 'Orion' in September last year. Orion is a device expected to replace smartphones. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the time, 'All attempts at AR devices so far have been headsets, goggles, and helmets,' adding, 'Orion will be the next computing device after the smartphone.'
