SK AX is embarking on the artificial intelligence transition (AX) for the shipbuilding and marine industry in collaboration with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.
SK AX announced on the 18th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering for the identification and execution of joint projects aimed at AX innovation in the manufacturing sector. This agreement aims to collaboratively plan and validate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and solutions that can be directly applied in manufacturing sites, developing them into a specialized model for the shipbuilding and marine fields and ultimately commercializing them.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will define tasks suitable for the characteristics of the shipbuilding and marine industry and provide an environment for validation. SK AX will jointly design and develop AI models based on its successful experiences in various manufacturing AI fields and optimize and apply them to the specific conditions of the field. The two companies will form a dedicated task force (TF) to carry out all stages from project identification to validation, technology advancement, commercialization, and performance dissemination.
The core of this agreement is the implementation of a cooperative system for AI technology based on 'agentic AI.' The goal is to apply AI throughout the entire process from ship design, production, to delivery, thereby increasing productivity, reducing dependence on skilled workers, and enhancing safety. SK AX stated, "We plan to utilize the AI-based manufacturing site innovation examples accumulated over the years to lead to reductions in shipbuilding time, input hours, and costs."
Kim Sung-jun, CEO of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, said, "Through this collaboration, we aim to innovate the entire process of design and production with AI and become a corporation that leads in technology and quality in the global shipbuilding and marine market." Yoon Poong-young, president of SK AX, remarked, "We will work to create a global standard for manufacturing AX, focusing on the shipbuilding and marine sectors through agentic AI."
