Kakao announced on the 13th that it has beta opened the platform 'PlayMCP' to discover various model context protocols (MCP) to be utilized in its agentic artificial intelligence (AI) service and to expand its ecosystem.
Kakao described PlayMCP as "the first case to introduce an open platform based on MCP in Korea."
MCP refers to a communication protocol that standardizes how AI models communicate with external data or tools. Just as various electronic devices are connected with a single USB port, AI models can easily exchange data with external systems through MCP. This allows users to handle tasks that meet their needs and purposes from a single service without switching between various services.
PlayMCP is an open platform that allows anyone to participate with a Kakao account. Developers can register their own MCP servers and test how they work in real conversations. They can also freely use other developers' MCPs and tools.
Currently, Kakao is publicly testing various MCP servers and consolidation tools, such as KakaoTalk chat rooms, Talk Calendar, KakaoMap, Gift, and Melon, to support various experiments.
