Elon Musk, chief executive officer (CEO) of Tesla, announced that he would file an antitrust lawsuit against Apple. He claims that Apple has favored OpenAI's ChatGPT and hindered the growth of Musk's artificial intelligence (AI) corporation xAI's chatbot "Grok."
On the 11th (local time), Musk posted on social media X (formerly Twitter) that "Apple is acting to prevent AI corporations, excluding OpenAI, from rising to the top of the App Store" and argued that "this is a clear violation of antitrust laws." He added, "(The developer of Grok) xAI will take legal action immediately."
In another post, Musk questioned, "X is the world's number one news app, and Grok is ranked fifth among all apps, so why does Apple refuse to list X or Grok in the 'Must Have' institutional sector?"
Bloomberg reported, "This public complaint is the biggest fight Musk has started since his heated debate with President Donald Trump last June."
Apple previously established a collaboration with OpenAI last year, integrating ChatGPT into iPhones, iPads, and Mac laptops and desktops.
At that time, Musk stated, "If Apple integrates OpenAI at the operating system (OS) level, Apple devices will be banned from my corporations, as this represents an unacceptable security breach."
According to CNBC, ChatGPT is ranked first in the best free app category in the U.S. Apple App Store and is the only AI chatbot listed among Apple's 'Must Have' institutional sector.
Musk co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman in 2015 but has been closely monitoring OpenAI since stepping down from the board in 2018. He has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman, claiming they have abandoned the founding goal of developing AI for the benefit of all humanity.
On the 7th, shortly after OpenAI released its new model "GPT-5," Musk remarked, "'Grok 4 Heavy' was smarter than the current GPT-5 two weeks ago, and it is definitely superior now."
