OpenAI unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, "GPT-5," on the 7th (local time). This model has made remarkable advancements in intelligence, speed, and accuracy compared to the transfer, and it will be available to all ChatGPT users for free. It combines GPT-4o and the reasoning model "o3" into one high-performance model, and OpenAI described this as an important milestone toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).
"GPT-5" is the first case that integrates a general conversational model with an advanced reasoning model, allowing users to get optimal answers from one model without needing to distinguish or select model types. OpenAI stated that this integration will significantly improve the AI usage experience.
Sam Altman, OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), noted during a pre-briefing the day before the unveiling that "GPT-5 represents the largest and most important leap we've made so far" and added, "Its performance is so outstanding that going back to GPT-4 is difficult." He compared it by saying, "GPT-3 feels like conversing with a high school student, GPT-4 with a college student, and GPT-5 with a doctoral-level expert."
GPT-5 has passed cutting-edge benchmark tests in various fields, including math, science, and coding, and the phenomenon of AI generating false information, known as "hallucination," has also significantly decreased compared to the transfer. Furthermore, the flow of conversations has become more natural, and it shows superior performance in writing, creative tasks, and software development.
Response speed has also improved significantly. It responds to questions faster than the existing reasoning model "o" series, and it is designed to present various answers even when the same question is repeated, allowing users to choose.
During a preview demonstration, GPT-5 showcased its ability to build a website in real-time designed for English users to easily learn French. It immediately responded to requests to add educational games, producing high-quality results. OpenAI explained that "creating such a website using traditional methods would require a developer at least several hours of work."
GPT-5 will be provided free of charge to all users of ChatGPT. Paid subscribers, known as Plus users, will have access to higher usage limits and improved features, while Pro users will have unlimited access. OpenAI emphasized that, similar to during the GPT-4o phase, this is a way to fulfill its mission of returning technological benefits to everyone.
