Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced on the 7th that it would provide OpenAI's open weight model through its artificial intelligence (AI) platform 'Amazon Bedrock' and the developer-oriented machine learning (ML) construction service 'Amazon SageMaker AI'. This is the first instance of an OpenAI model being offered on the AWS platform.
The models being introduced this time are OpenAI's recently released open weight models gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. Open weight differs from existing open-source software (SW) in that it publishes the internal weights learned by AI while keeping the model structure, data, and source code confidential.
AWS stated that when running gpt-oss-120b on Amazon Bedrock, it offers performance per price that is 10 times better than Gemini, 18 times better than DeepSeek, and 7 times better than the OpenAI o4 model.
Atul Deo, AWS product director, noted, "The open weight model is a critical innovation area for the future development of generative AI technology, and including the OpenAI model released today, AWS has continuously invested to provide the most effective environment for executing this."
He added, "OpenAI joining as a new open weight model partner for AWS is a natural progression in AWS's ongoing efforts to provide cutting-edge AI technology to organizations worldwide, and AWS's vast customer base will be a turning point in the global proliferation of OpenAI technology."
