Kakao Games reported an operating loss of 8.6 billion won in the second quarter of 2025, marking a turnaround to deficit compared to the same period last year on June 6.
According to the Korean International Financial Reporting Standards (K-IFRS), second-quarter sales fell 24.2% year on year to 115.8 billion won, and the net loss for the period widened to 33.6 billion won.
The mobile game institutional sector recorded sales of 101 billion won, down 26% year on year but up 5% compared to the previous quarter. Sales from PC online games amounted to 14.8 billion won, a decrease of 9% year on year and 45% from the previous quarter.
However, despite a gap in new releases in the second quarter, the company noted that the operational loss narrowed by about 31% from the previous quarter, thanks to the global expansion of 'Odin: Valhalla Rising' and an increased share of revenue from its own developed intellectual property (IP).
Kakao Games plans to continue its global strategy in the third quarter. A global launch of the mobile action RPG 'Guardians Order' is scheduled for September, and 'God Save Birmingham,' developed by its subsidiary Ocean Drive Studio, will be showcased at the Gamescom event in Germany.
Additionally, it has secured a variety of new titles across different genres, including ▲ a collectible nurturing simulation game 'Project C' ▲ a 2.5D MMORPG 'Project OQ' ▲ and a strategic adventure RPG 'Dungeon Rise', while also continuing the development of large-scale new titles based on PC and console, such as 'Chrono Odyssey,' 'ArcheAge Chronicle,' and 'Project Q.'
Han Sang-woo, CEO of Kakao Games, said, 'We are actively seeking prominent IPs to secure future growth drivers to respond swiftly to the global market environment,' adding, 'We will focus on strengthening our IP competitiveness and developing multi-genre new titles for sustainable growth.'
