Vision AI corporation Superb AI announced on the 5th that it will participate in the LG AI Research Consortium, selected as one of the final five teams in the 'Independent AI Foundation Model' project hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 4th.
Leveraging its experience in building the country's first vision foundation model, Superb AI is uniquely responsible for developing artificial intelligence (AI) models among non-LG affiliates within the consortium. It will be in charge of the design and overall construction of a data foundation for implementing multimodal AI and physical AI by collecting, selecting, and synthesizing complex environmental data such as visual, natural language, and behavior.
This project is operated under a 'Moving Target' strategy, aiming for over 95% performance compared to the world's leading models on a cycle of 6 months to 1 year to respond to the rapidly changing AI technology environment. The targets will be rerouted at each stage evaluation to continuously keep up with the latest global model levels, with the goal of developing a large-scale AI model representing Korea in the next three years.
Unlike other consortiums that approach with a focus on large language models (LLM), the LG AI Research Consortium has put forth a differentiated strategy aiming for vision language models (VLM), multimodal AI (technology that integrates and processes different forms of data such as text, images, audio, and video), and physical AI.
Physical AI refers to the next-generation AI that goes beyond understanding text to integrate visual information and language, and further interact directly with the real world. It includes intelligence capable of recognizing the environment and analyzing data through sensors like cameras and LiDAR, determining actions, and executing these through robotic arms. It can be utilized in various industries including manufacturing, logistics, medical services, and especially in Korea, a manufacturing powerhouse with developed industries like automobiles, semiconductors, and logistics, which benefits from abundant industrial data and infrastructure necessary for physical AI development.
Superb AI supports the development of AI that will serve as the brain for the physical AI era by understanding various types of three-dimensional spaces and situations, making independent judgments, and interacting with objects. In this process, it plans to release commercially usable multimodal data as open-source to lower the commercialization barriers for physical AI.
