"By introducing artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms into display design, we completed a task that used to take a month in just 8 hours. LG Display plans to significantly enhance productivity by incorporating AI across all areas of development, design, and production."
Lee Hee-dong, head of the design AI team at LG Display, said during an online seminar on AX (AI transformation) held on the 5th. On that day, LG Display announced it would make this year the inaugural year of AX innovation and comprehensively apply its self-developed AI across all business areas, from development and production to administration.
LG Display plans to strengthen its business structure centered on organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) by accelerating AX innovation and improving cost and profitability. LG Display explained that it had already introduced an AI production system last year, which enhanced productivity and resulted in a profitability improvement effect of over 200 billion won. It also noted that by independently building an AI assistant system, it has saved more than 10 billion won in costs compared to introducing external solutions.
◇ "OLED panel design that used to take a month is completed in 8 hours with AI"
LG Display is introducing a design AI that suggests optimized design drawings from the product development stage. As the first step, the company completed the development of the 'Edge design AI algorithm' for irregular display panels in June.
Unlike regular displays, irregular displays have edge portions that are curved or have thin bezels. Previously, designing the compensation patterns formed on the outer edges of the panels was challenging because each had to be tailored to match the design of the display's outer edges. During the design of existing irregular displays, it was necessary to manually design different structural compensation patterns each time, leading to frequent errors and defects. When such defects occurred, the design had to be started over from scratch, resulting in an average of about one month to generate a single drawing.
In response, LG Display developed its own 'Edge design AI algorithm' capable of handling irregular designs. The AI automatically designs the necessary patterns for the curved outer parts of the panels. The company explained that errors have significantly decreased and the time required has drastically reduced to 8 hours.
◇ 'AI production system' introduced to OLED processes… "Saved over 20 billion won"
LG Display stated that it has specialized its independently developed 'AI production system' for the OLED manufacturing process. LG Display plans to proactively apply the 'AI production system' across all OLED processes in mobile, TV, IT, and automotive sectors.
LG Display has trained the knowledge required for the OLED manufacturing process in the 'AI production system.' The AI automatically analyzes numerous potential causes of anomalies that may occur in the OLED manufacturing process and suggests solutions. The introduction of AI has improved data analysis capabilities, speed, and accuracy.
LG Display explained that the time taken for quality improvement has been significantly reduced from an average of 3 weeks to 2 days due to the introduction of the 'AI production system,' and that it has generated cost benefits of over 20 billion won from increased production of quality products. Additionally, it has allowed the team to focus on high-value tasks, such as deriving solutions and applying improvement measures, instead of manually collecting and analyzing data.
LG Display has explained that it is enhancing work efficiency by introducing its own AI assistant, 'HI-D.' Currently, HI-D provides services such as AI knowledge search, real-time translation for video conferences, meeting minutes writing, email AI summarization and draft writing. In the second half of the year, the company plans to expand to include the document writing assistant function that prepares draft PPTs for reports.
