Google has removed more than 50 organizations related to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) from its sponsorship list.
On the 1st (local time), according to the U.S. nonprofit organization Tech Transparency Project (TTP), Google's recently released list of sponsored organizations excludes more than 200 organizations that had been receiving support until this year. TTP reported that this is the largest scale in at least five years. Notably, the largest portion of the excluded organizations were DEI organizations, a concept that has faced ongoing attacks from the Donald Trump administration, with a total of 58 related organizations removed from the list.
TTP noted, "It is unclear whether Google has stopped funding these organizations or is simply trying to hide the fact of support, but both scenarios suggest that Google is taking additional steps to distance itself from DEI programs."
DEI is a policy intended to protect marginalized and disadvantaged races, genders, and classes in U.S. history, but President Trump argued that it represents reverse discrimination against whites and men, signing an executive order to eliminate DEI policies upon taking office in January. Consequently, Google removed references to DEI in its annual report submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in February and abolished diversity-related hiring goals.
Among the organizations excluded from this year's sponsorship list is the group called the National Network to End Domestic Violence. This organization has been receiving funding from Google for at least nine years for education and support on violence against women and public awareness campaigns. Until last year, Google had sponsored this organization with $75,000 (about 75 million won), but it did not explain the reason for excluding it from this year's list.
Google stated, "We support hundreds of organizations across the political spectrum advocating innovation-friendly policies, and these organizations change annually depending on where our support can have the most significant impact."
