You will be able to use mobile identification for the identity verification process required for mobile phone activation.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 30th that starting in July, it will implement a system that allows identity verification for mobile phone activation using mobile identification. The plan is to gradually expand the scope of application, starting with the distribution networks of SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus, to include mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) in the second half of this year.
To activate with mobile identification, previously only mobile driver's licenses could be used. With this measure, mobile resident registration cards and mobile national veteran registration certificates can now also be used. The Ministry of Science and ICT noted, "Mobile identification is a self-held verification method" and expressed expectations that it will be effective in preventing issues such as identity theft and illegal registrations related to fake phones, which have been pointed out until now.
Lee Do-kyu, director of communication policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "Now, as long as you have a smartphone, you can easily and safely subscribe to communication services" and added, "As digital identification methods increase, user convenience and information protection levels are also expected to improve together."
