Samsung Electronics will participate in "CineEurope 2025," the largest film industry fair in Europe, held from June 16 to 19 (local time) in Barcelona, Spain, to showcase its cinema LED screen "Onyx" to the European market. The cinema LED screen "Onyx" is the world's first theater-specific LED screen, introduced by Samsung Electronics in 2017.
Samsung Electronics revealed the upgraded Onyx new product at "CinemaCon 2025" held in Las Vegas, USA, in April. Onyx features high image quality, screen size expansion options, various media server compatibility, and the industry's first paid long-term quality warranty. Onyx supports ▲4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160) ▲maximum 4K 120Hz frame rate ▲DCI-P3 100% accurate color representation.
It implements deep blacks and overwhelming contrast, capturing hidden details in darkness as well as the colors and textures intended by the creators, enabling the audience to immerse naturally in the world of the film.
Additionally, it supports a maximum brightness of 300 nits, approximately six times brighter than existing projectors, allowing vivid presentations of various content such as concerts and live sports events in relatively high-illumination environments.
It also offers scaling options to maximize space utilization according to the size of the screening room. It provides the industry's first 10-year paid long-term quality warranty program to support the stable operation of the screening room.
Samsung Electronics and Pixar have mastered the new Disney-Pixar film "Elio" in 4K HDR content optimized for Onyx and will provide it to theaters worldwide. In addition, they plan to master and distribute future releases, including "Hoppers" and "Toy Story 5," which are set to be released in 2026 in 4K HDR.
Onyx will also be installed at the Pixar campus located in California, USA, to be used for HDR color and brightness testing, HDR mastering content testing, and premieres for directors and production staff.
Jesse Schroeder, vice president of post-production at Pixar Animation Studios, said, "Samsung's cinema LED screen 'Onyx' vividly, dynamically, and realistically implements the visuals intended by filmmakers," adding, "The 4K HDR-based mastering work utilizing Onyx provides creators with new opportunities for visual storytelling and offers audiences a next-generation cinema experience."
Jeong Hoon, vice president of the Video Display Business at Samsung Electronics, noted, "We are pleased to introduce the technology of the Onyx screen, which enhances the immersive experience that can only be felt in theaters, to Europe," and said, "We will provide a differentiated cinema experience through continuous collaboration with global film production studios such as Pixar Animation Studios."
Meanwhile, the 4K HDR mastered content of "Elio," scheduled to be released domestically on June 18, will be available at the Lotte Cinema Super LED screening room, where Samsung's cinema LED Onyx is installed.
