SK Telecom announced on the 10th that the number of people waiting to replace their Subscriber Identification Module (USIM) has decreased to 280. An additional 1.9 million USIMs are scheduled to be secured this week, allowing for an average of 300,000 exchanges per day. As a result, all waiting individuals are expected to be able to make the exchange by the 20th.
On the same day, SK Telecom held a daily briefing on the cyber incident at Samhwa Tower in Jung-gu, Seoul, and announced that the number of accumulated exchanges had increased to 6.8 million, with 170,000 people having changed their USIM the previous day. Kim Hee-seob, director of the PR Center at SK Telecom, noted that "an additional 1.9 million USIMs will be received by the 14th."
SK Telecom anticipates that announcements regarding the resumption of new sales, enhanced security strategies, and customer compensation measures will all be made by the end of this month. Kim stated, "We are explaining the USIM replacement efforts and on-site support to the Ministry of Science and ICT every day," and added, "We are prioritizing the replacement work, and if those who made reservations complete their exchanges quickly, new sales might be resumed."
The establishment of the security enhancement strategy is in the final stage. Compensation measures discussed by the Customer Trust Recovery Committee are expected to be announced around the end of June when the results of the government investigation team are released.
There are 460,000 subscribers who received notification that they could replace their USIM but have not come in within a week. Kim noted, "Excluding the subscribers who have not visited the store, the remaining reservations will likely drop to below 2 million soon," and added, "Once the replacements for those who made reservations are completed, we will prepare a way for those who haven't reserved to conveniently exchange their USIMs at the store."
SK Telecom is deploying head office and subsidiary employees to nationwide stores to support the USIM replacement work. Lim Bong-ho, head of the Mobile Network Operator (MNO) division at SK Telecom, said, "Subsidiary and affiliate employees are supporting as much as possible, and since we have secured sufficient supplies, we believe we can replace around 250,000 to 300,000 USIMs per day."
