LG Uplus announced on the 29th that it will open a next-generation liquid cooling-based demo room at the Pyeongchon 2 Center, a large-scale Internet Data Center (IDC), and begin technology demonstrations to enhance the cooling efficiency and sustainability of AI Data Centers (AIDC).
The technology demonstration conducted in the demo room will involve domestic and international major partners, including Vertiv, a leader in the global liquid cooling market for data centers, CoolIT Systems, and LG Electronics, among others.
The cooling technologies being validated in the demo room are "direct-chip cooling" and "immersion cooling." Direct-chip cooling circulates coolant through cooling plates attached to servers, while immersion cooling involves submerging servers in a tank of insulating oil that does not conduct electricity to remove heat.
The key device, the "coolant distribution unit (CDU)," allows the coolant to be evenly distributed and recovered throughout the servers, enabling optimization of the cooling efficiency and energy usage for the entire system.
LG Uplus previously unveiled this liquid cooling technology at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 held in Barcelona, Spain, in March. The demo room at the Pyeongchon 2 Center is set to operate as a real R&D testbed to validate the cooling technology.
Based on this, LG Uplus plans to fully apply liquid cooling technology to the Pyeongchon 2 Center, the largest data center in the metropolitan area, and the upcoming Paju AIDC.
