KT announced on the 23rd that it will collaborate with the Korea University Institute of National Culture to work on research for developing Korean-style AI.

Through its cooperation with the Institute of National Culture, KT has secured extensive high-quality data in the field of Korean studies necessary for the development of 'Korean-style AI,' based on a deep understanding of the Korean way of thinking and emotions, as well as Korea's history, philosophy, and society.

KT is pushing ahead with the development of Korean-style AI, aiming for commercialization in the first half of the year. It plans to accelerate the development of more sophisticated Korean-style AI by utilizing various Korean language dictionary data, including the Korea University Korean Dictionary, encyclopedic data from the Dictionary of Modern Korean Novels and the Dictionary of Modern Publications, as well as extensive Korean studies data from the Institute of National Culture.

Prior to this collaboration, KT and the Institute of National Culture engaged in in-depth discussions since last year based on a shared sense of mission and direction regarding the development of Korean-style AI, researching together what data to use and how to utilize it most appropriately.

In addition, KT and the Institute of National Culture will continue to promote research collaboration projects aimed at the development of Korean-style AI. They plan to conduct joint research on AI data quality enhancement and the study of values in Korean-style AI, ensuring that AI accurately reflects Korea's historical perspective and national sentiment without bias towards specific thoughts or emotions, and will share the results.

The Institute of National Culture at Korea University is a leading research institution in the field of Korean studies in South Korea, actively conducting research projects related to the publication of Korean dictionaries and works on Korean culture and history. It has also taken a leading role in digital humanities research based on a strong interest in both humanities and information technology.

Heo Eun, director of the Institute of National Culture, noted, 'As we face a rapidly changing era with the advent of AI, the humanities must play a leading role in presenting directions for humanity and Korean society and providing solutions to pressing challenges based on deep reflection.' She added, 'The Institute of National Culture at Korea University will venture into a new domain called “the humanities of the Korean-style AI era” in partnership with the solid backing of KT.'

Oh Seung-pil, vice president of KT's Technology Innovation Division, said, 'I expect that securing high-quality data based on extensive Korean emotions and knowledge possessed by the Institute of National Culture will greatly assist in laying the groundwork for Korean-style AI.' He added, 'We plan to continue expanding collaboration with various domestic institutions for the research and development of Korean-style AI.'
