Samsung Electronics has produced a chairperson in the global telecommunications standard organization 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
3GPP noted that at the 'RAN Technical Summit' held in Incheon on the 12th, Master Kim Yoon-sun of Samsung Electronics was elected as chair of the Technical Specification Group for Radio Access Networks (TSG RAN). Master Kim was previously elected as the chair of the Physical Layer Technical Working Group in 2021, becoming the first Korean to hold that position. This chairperson election is regarded as recognition of Samsung Electronics' leadership in telecommunications technology.
3GPP consists of three technical specification groups—Radio Access Network (RAN), Service and System (SA), and Core Network and Terminals (CT)—and 15 technical working groups, with Samsung Electronics currently holding two chairperson seats and four vice-chairperson seats in 3GPP. Master Kim Yoon-sun has contributed to the advancement of the 5G network industry by leading the standardization of physical layer technology for 5G.
This chairperson election signifies the beginning of the standardization work for 6G (sixth-generation telecommunications). 6G aims for futuristic technological advancements such as energy savings, improvement of AI-based network quality, and the introduction of quantum computer security technology. 3GPP plans to formally begin its 6G research in the latter half of this year.
Samsung Electronics is expected to lead the 6G standardization through its leadership in next-generation communication technology, contributing to the advancement of the telecommunications industry.
Master Kim Yoon-sun said, 'We will successfully promote the standardization of 6G technology in cooperation with corporations.' Samsung Electronics recently released a white paper on 6G, emphasizing its leadership in the direction of 6G research and key technologies.
