SK keyfoundry held a board meeting on the 7th and announced that it has decided to acquire a 98.59% equity stake in its subsidiary, SK Powertech, from SK㈜ for 25 billion won. SK keyfoundry, a subsidiary of SK hynix, plans to accelerate its capabilities in power semiconductors through this equity acquisition.

SK keyfoundry noted, "This equity acquisition is aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of our next-generation compound semiconductor business," adding, "We believe that SK keyfoundry, which possesses semiconductor mass production expertise, can create synergy with SK Powertech, which holds silicon carbide (SiC) based power semiconductor technology."

Power semiconductors are essential components that regulate the current direction and control power conversion for electronic devices requiring electricity, electric vehicles, and hydrogen cars. In particular, SiC power semiconductors are gaining attention as next-generation semiconductors due to their durability, stability, and versatility, maintaining a power conversion efficiency of over 98% even in extreme environments of high temperature and high voltage.

According to the global market research firm Omdia, the SiC semiconductor market is expected to reach a size of $23 billion by 2030, growing at an annual average rate of 31%.
