Amazon Web Services (AWS) is strong not only in high-performance cloud but also in infrastructure capabilities such as data centers. LG Uplus is specialized in artificial intelligence (AI) safety compared to its competitors. This is why I believe the combination of AWS and LG Uplus will exert the strongest power in terms of Sovereign (independent) AI development. We also desire human exchanges with Google, which has agreed to collaborate to enhance the development capabilities of its AI service 'Excio.'
Hong Beom-sik, CEO of LG Uplus, mentioned this during the first press briefing held on the 4th (local time) at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, Spain. On this day, CEO Hong presented a blueprint to expand the market base through synergies with AWS, which agreed to collaborate for business-to-business (B2B) AI cloud development, and Google, which agreed to collaborate in the business-to-consumer (B2C) AI agent sector.
CEO Hong noted, "AWS has been cooperating for a long time with LG CNS, a group affiliate, and AWS does not provide data center resources to multiple corporations. This collaboration has been made possible because trust has been built at the group level." He added, "I believe the combination of AWS, which values safety and trust, and LG Uplus can ultimately develop the best Korean-style AI."
LG Uplus announced that it will collaborate with AWS and the artificial intelligence contact center (AICC) in AI model development. CEO Hong stated, "Currently, the three telecommunications companies have about 4,000 consultants in customer centers, which is quite high compared to the average of 400 in other industries, such as insurance companies." He continued, "This means that the volume of inquiries to telecommunications companies is high and the content is complex." He added, "I believe that applying AI to the contact center can solve a variety of problems, and we are also considering establishing an AI specialized center with AWS to develop models."
CEO Hong also stated, "LG Uplus has been collaborating with Google for a long time, applying the Android operating system (OS) to internet TV (IPTV) set-top boxes as the first among the three telecom companies (SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus). Although the conditions are not easy, we want to strengthen our capabilities through human exchanges, as trust relationships have been formed."
CEO Hong presented plans to expand subscriptions for Excio. Since November last year, LG Uplus has been providing call recording and summary functions for iPhones to Excio subscribers. CEO Hong mentioned, "Excio recorded 200,000 monthly active users (MAU) until last month, with a goal of reaching 1 million in the first half of this year," adding, "Next month, we will also launch the Android OS version to increase subscriptions and consider expanding the usage scope to customers of other telecommunications companies in the future."
