OpenAI announced on the 27th (local time) that it will release its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, GPT-4.5, in a research preview format.
GPT-4.5 is a successor to the GPT-4o model, which was revealed in May of last year, and is OpenAI's last non-inference model. It is distinct from the inference model series and from GPT-5 onward, inference and general models will be integrated.
Sam Altman, OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer (CEO), noted through social media on the 12th that GPT-4.5 would be "released within weeks" and that it would be "the last model that does not utilize the chain-of-thought."
OpenAI explained that GPT-4.5 is the largest and most powerful conversational AI model released to date, with enhanced capabilities to recognize patterns and find correlations. It emphasized that emotional intelligence (EQ) has been strengthened, enabling more natural conversations with people.
Additionally, the new model is expected to be useful in writing, programming, and practical problem solving, and it is projected that the phenomenon of AI generating information that is inconsistent with facts, known as "hallucination," will decrease.
GPT-4.5 supports features such as searching for the latest information, uploading files and images, and allows writing and coding tasks using a canvas.
OpenAI revealed that in a comparison of performance among GPT-4.5, its previous model GPT-4o, and the recently released inference model "o3-mini," GPT-4.5 overwhelmingly surpassed GPT-4o (38.6%) and o3-mini (15.0%) with an accuracy rate of 62.5% on straightforward questions, and it had a lower hallucination rate of 37.1% compared to GPT-4o (59.8%) and o3-mini (80.3%).
In addition, in benchmark tests of AI models, GPT-4.5 demonstrated superior performance across all four institutional sectors, including mathematics and science, over GPT-4o, and outperformed o3-mini in language and multimodal sectors, while recording somewhat lower performance in science and mathematics.
GPT-4.5 will be initially available for the $200 per month ChatGPT Pro plan, and OpenAI stated that it will strive to make it accessible to more users in the future.
