The Korea Communications Commission launched a fact-finding investigation to determine whether OpenAI's generative artificial intelligence (AI) ChatGPT violated current laws.
On the 27th, the commission stated that it has commenced a fact-finding investigation into whether the limitation of service usage for paid ChatGPT users and the restriction of users' cancellations violated the Telecommunications Business Act. However, it did not disclose the date of the investigation's commencement or any details.
According to the Telecommunications Business Act, the commission may conduct necessary investigations ex officio when it recognizes that there are violations of certain provisions, either through reports or awareness of noncompliance with recommendations. If violations are confirmed after the investigation, it may issue corrective orders or impose penalty surcharges following a resolution of the plenary meeting.
