Google Cloud announced on the 26th that it has released a public preview version of Gemini Code Assist for Individuals for free. All developers, including students and freelancers, can utilize the artificial intelligence (AI) coding features based on Gemini 2.0 across various development environments without any expense.
Gemini Code Assist for Individuals operates based on Gemini 2.0. It supports all programming languages in the public domain and is optimized for coding by incorporating a fine-tuned Gemini 2.0 model that analyzes and validates a vast array of real coding examples. As a result, it provides an enhanced level of AI-based code recommendation features and offers tailored solutions for developers of varying levels, Google Cloud noted.
Developers can use natural language, including Korean, to generate code with Gemini Code Assist. For example, a freelance website developer can quickly generate code with just a prompt like, "Create a simple HTML form with fields for name, email, and message, then add a 'submit' button." They can also automate repetitive tasks by requesting Gemini to "Write a script that sends an email containing the latest daily weather forecast" or "Explain what this Python code snippet does and find errors in it."
Another strength of Gemini Code Assist for Individuals is its usage limit. While other free coding assistant products on the market have a code completion limit of only about 2,000 times each month, Gemini Code Assist can complete up to 180,000 codes per month. This corresponds to an extremely high usage even based on typical developers.
Furthermore, Gemini Code Assist for Individuals provides a chat context window that supports up to 128,000 tokens. This allows developers to work with large files and gain a better understanding of the entire structure of the code, enabling them to utilize Gemini Code Assist more effectively. Additionally, developers can delegate repetitive tasks like commenting and test automation to Gemini, allowing them to focus on more creative development work through the chat feature.
Google Cloud also released a public preview version of Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, which provides free AI-based code review for both public and private repositories. This enables developers to write better code and shorten code review times.
Developers can use Gemini Code Assist for GitHub within the GitHub app to detect issues or bugs in coding styles and receive automatic suggestions for code changes and modifications. By entrusting basic code reviews to an AI agent, they can maintain code repositories more conveniently and enhance quality. Moreover, since each development team may have different best practices, coding rules, and preferred frameworks and libraries, each team can set customized style guides for code reviews using Gemini Code Assist for GitHub.
Additionally, Google Cloud offers the new version of Gemini Code Assist for free in Visual Studio Code and JetBrains IDE (Integrated Development Environment). This is intended to provide coding completion, generation, and chat features previously offered to corporations to individual developers as well. The service is also available for free on Firebase and Android Studio.
