Sam Altman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OpenAI, has become a father with the birth of his first son at 39 years old.
On the 23rd, Altman posted a photo of his newborn on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, "Welcome to the world!" He noted, "My son was born sooner than expected, so he will be in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) a bit longer," adding, "My son is doing well, and I have never felt this kind of love before."
Sam Altman married Australian programmer Oliver Mulhern in early 2024. The same-sex couple later began plans to have a child through a surrogate. Altman, who grew up in a "middle-class Jewish family," expressed in a past interview with New York Magazine that he wants a big family. In late January, Altman appeared on a well-known podcast, saying, "I am looking forward to the child soon to be born," and remarked, "Future children will not know a world without smarter AIs than themselves."
Following the news of Altman's new son, Satya Nadella, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Microsoft, said, "Sam, congratulations sincerely!" adding, "Becoming a parent is one of the most profound and rewarding experiences in life. I wish you and your family only good things."
Altman has kept his personal life as private as possible. However, he is known to reside during the week in a dwelling in the Russian Hill area of San Francisco and on weekends in a 25-year-old house with a farm in Napa Valley after marrying Mulhern in January last year. His husband Mulhern first appeared publicly at the White House dinner in 2023.
