LG CNS announced on the 19th that it will actively pursue the AX (AI Transformation) project in collaboration with S-OIL.
The two companies recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at LG CNS's headquarters in Magok to implement an intelligent factory based on AI and big data. Through this agreement, they plan to jointly develop the ▲flare stack optimization system ▲Process Safety Management (PSM) integrated system ▲AX platform, aiming to enhance the operational and safety management efficiency of S-OIL's Ulsan plant.
A flare stack is a facility that safely discharges flammable gases produced in refining and petrochemical plants into the atmosphere by burning them. If the gas is not completely combusted, soot and flames can occur, making real-time monitoring and rapid response crucial.
LG CNS will establish an AI-based flare stack optimization system that analyzes the color of smoke and the state of flames in real-time, 24 hours a day, using AI video analysis technology and AI CCTV. When abnormal signs are detected, it can automatically control the steam valve to maintain an optimal state, which is expected to improve operational efficiency by reducing the burden of staff needing to manually check the flare stack.
Additionally, LG CNS and S-OIL plan to enhance the Process Safety Management (PSM) system. PSM is a system that includes a report consisting of 12 items, including process safety data, work permits, process hazard assessments, emergency response plans, and facility management, which must be regularly submitted to the Ministry of Employment and Labor. This is essential for business sites handling high-risk chemicals. Preparing for this alone takes 3 to 6 months, and systematic management is crucial due to the need to document extensive information for inspections.
LG CNS and S-OIL plan to introduce optimized generative AI and voice recognition technology to S-OIL by combining their experiences and expertise in digital transformation within the manufacturing industry. This will support employees in performing Process Safety Management (PSM) tasks more effectively.
For instance, as part of the PSM process, interviews are conducted to enhance employees' safety awareness, and LG CNS will develop an "AI mock interview" feature to assist with this. The generative AI will create questions based on interview question items and environmental and safety-related data, while providing feedback on employees' responses. This is expected to enable employees to prepare effectively for interviews and contribute to raising safety awareness.
The two companies will also push for the establishment of the "AX platform" at the S-OIL Ulsan plant. To this end, LG CNS plans to utilize its proprietary solutions such as the enterprise generative AI platform "DAP GenAI Platform" and the AI and big data analysis platform "DAP MLDL." S-OIL plant employees will be able to directly develop and apply various generative AI services in the field, allowing for the establishment of a data-driven rapid and accurate decision-making system. S-OIL aims to accelerate smart factory innovations and actively promote process optimization and improvement of work efficiency through the use of AI technology via the "AX platform."
Hyun Sin-kyun, CEO of LG CNS, said, "We will apply LG CNS's unique generative AI technology to S-OIL's advanced factory to further accelerate the AX of the factory and significantly enhance employees' work efficiency to provide differentiated customer value."
Park Bong-soo, president of S-OIL's operations, said, "S-OIL is significantly improving safety and operational efficiency in the field by recently introducing various fourth industrial revolution technologies," adding, "I have great expectations for collaborating with LG CNS, which possesses both AI technology and know-how for operating intelligent factories, in implementing a digital refining plant."
