Meta Platforms (Meta) announced the world's longest underwater cable project, connecting five continents.
On the 14th, Meta noted through its company website, "Today we unveil our most ambitious underwater cable project, 'Project Waterworth.'"
It explained that once this project is completed, it will be a submarine cable with a total length of 50,000 kilometers, longer than the circumference of the Earth, and will apply world-class technology.
Meta plans to open three new underwater routes consolidating the United States, India, Brazil, South Africa, and others, and revealed related images.
It also stated that this project would contribute to building a high-speed network for global artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, predicting that it would be a multiyear project costing billions of dollars.
Over the past decade, Meta has collaborated with various partners to develop more than 20 underwater cables and has led innovation in infrastructure, including 24 pairs of optical fiber cables, and plans to further advance its engineering technology through this project.
Meanwhile, the IT media outlet TechCrunch analyzed that geopolitical factors influenced Meta's decision to build the underwater cables.
According to the outlet, Meta's project was mentioned in a joint statement by U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced by the White House on the 13th. The statement included that "to enhance connectivity in the Indian Ocean, the two leaders welcomed the initiation of Meta's billion-dollar underwater cable project, and India plans to invest in cable maintenance, repair, and financing."
