Based on the capabilities accumulated over a long time while sharing the daily lives of a majority of the people, Kakao's role in this era is to present a personalized artificial intelligence (AI) that "understands users best." To achieve this, we will collaborate with OpenAI, which possesses superior technological competitiveness, to provide innovative customer experiences and lead the popularization of AI services.
Jeong Sin-a, CEO of Kakao, held a press conference at The Plaza in Jung-gu on the 4th, elaborating on the background of the strategic partnership with OpenAI. Kakao is the first in Korea to establish a strategic alliance with OpenAI.
CEO Jeong said, "Since last September, Kakao and OpenAI have been discussing collaboration plans in various areas such as technology, services, and business under the same goal of 'popularizing AI services.' We have decided to utilize OpenAI's latest AI technology API in Kakao's key services, such as KakaoTalk and the AI agent 'Kanana.'" He added, "We have also decided to introduce ChatGPT Enterprise to accelerate Kakao's transition to an 'AI native company.'"
Kakao will also utilize OpenAI's models along with its own language model for the Kanana service currently under development. Kanana is an AI agent service that helps users form and strengthen relationships by providing context-aware responses not only in one-on-one conversations but also in group chats. CEO Jeong explained, "We aim to enhance this further using OpenAI's technology to provide users with the highest level of AI experience."
The two companies will also pursue joint product development beyond technological collaboration. CEO Jeong noted, "I believe that collaboration with OpenAI is crucial from the perspective of completing personalized AI within Kakao's products and ecosystem," adding, "We will develop joint products utilizing AI capabilities by identifying the points of contact that best meet user needs based on user data."
CEO Jeong also emphasized that their vision for AI safety aligns with OpenAI's. He stated, "Since we have access to user data, ensuring compliance with AI ethics and safety is important. OpenAI also considers this safety crucial, which resonates with our business philosophy."
On this day, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made a surprise appearance to express expectations for the collaboration between the two companies. CEO Altman stated, "Kakao has a deep understanding of how technology enriches daily life and has continuously provided innovative experiences to users. We are very pleased to be able to collaborate in integrating our cutting-edge AI technology into Kakao services to innovate the communication and consolidation methods of Kakao users."
