Lee Jae-Yong, chairman of Samsung Electronics, will hold a trilateral meeting on the 4th with Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Masayoshi Son, chairman of SoftBank Group. The three leaders of Samsung Electronics, OpenAI, and SoftBank are expected to discuss projects related to artificial intelligence (AI).
According to industry sources, the chairman is scheduled to meet with CEO Altman and chairman Son that afternoon at the Seocho office in Seoul for an AI trilateral meeting. Chairman Son entered the country that morning through Gimpo International Airport for this meeting.
With OpenAI and SoftBank joining hands in a $500 billion (approximately 720 trillion won) AI infrastructure project called "Stargate," they are likely to seek comprehensive cooperation with Samsung Electronics as well. Chairman Son has maintained a close relationship with the chairman, visiting Korea in 2022 to meet with him.
On that day, CEO Altman met with reporters and said, "There are many Korean companies that can contribute to Stargate," noting that, "It is possible only if many companies enter (the project)." He also mentioned, "Korea seems to be an important part (of Stargate)," adding, "We are focusing on Korea."
Samsung Electronics, which has a mobile business in addition to its foundry (contract semiconductor manufacturing), is seen as the optimal partner for the AI chips and devices that CEO Altman is envisioning. CEO Altman visited Samsung Electronics' foundry facilities at the Pyeongtaek campus during his visit to Korea last year.
Earlier that day, Chey Tae-Won, chairman of SK Group, also held a 40-minute AI meeting with CEO Altman. It is reported that chairman Chey and CEO Altman discussed comprehensive cooperation between the two companies aimed at expanding AI semiconductors and the AI ecosystem during the meeting.
