Samsung Electronics is expected to reclaim the top spot in semiconductor supplier revenue in the previous year, surpassing Intel. However, the statistics exclude TSMC, the world’s largest foundry operator.
In the case of Samsung Electronics, while the profitability of DRAM and NAND flash has deteriorated, leading to poor performance, revenue seems to have successfully rebounded. SK hynix, which holds a strong position in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market, is projected to rise to 4th place globally this year.
According to market research firm Gartner, global semiconductor revenue is expected to reach $626 billion in 2024, an increase of 18.1% from the previous year’s $530 billion.
Among these, the total revenue of the top 25 semiconductor suppliers is predicted to increase by 21.1% compared to the previous year. Consequently, their share of the overall market is expected to rise from 75.3% in 2023 to 77.2% in 2024, an increase of 1.9 percentage points.
Amid global economic recession, a polarization in demand between AI semiconductor products such as HBM and legacy products has intensified, leading to mixed fortunes among semiconductor companies.
Samsung Electronics is expected to regain the number one position it lost to Intel in 2023 within a year. The estimated semiconductor revenue for Samsung Electronics in the previous year was $66.5 billion, an increase of 62.5% from the previous year.
Gartner noted, "After showing a decline for two consecutive years, memory product revenue rebounded significantly last year," and analyzed that "Samsung is expected to record an average annual growth rate of 4.9% over the past five years up to last year."
