Bloomberg reported on the 23rd that Samsung Electronics is developing augmented reality (AR) glasses in partnership with Google.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Tae-moon Noh, president of Samsung Electronics' mobile experience (MX) division, did not reveal further details about the AR glasses but noted that they would eventually be released as part of their joint effort to develop an Android extended reality (XR) operating system.
Last month, Samsung and Google unveiled the XR platform and the device to be equipped with it, "Project Infinite," a headset. President Noh stated regarding the timing of the AR glasses' release, "We will work to reach the desired quality and preparation status as quickly as possible."
Currently, Google, Apple, and Meta Platforms (Meta), among others, are striving to create lightweight AR glasses that display data and graphics alongside real views. However, there are concerns that the development speed is slow due to expense and technical issues. The AR glasses from Samsung and Google are expected to compete with Meta's products, scheduled for release in 2027. There are also suggestions that Apple may release related products.
Earlier, the Project Infinite headset, expected to be released this year, combines AR and virtual reality. While it uses an outward-facing camera to create AR effects, it is primarily a VR device that fully envelops the user.
President Noh stated he is reviewing the release date and price of the Infinite headset. He added that Samsung and Google are collaborating with third parties to develop original content tailored for the headset.
