Global PC manufacturers including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are competing fiercely over artificial intelligence (AI) PCs at the world's largest IT exhibition, CES 2025. Following the unveiling of new AI PC products at this CES, competition among AI chip manufacturers that influence the performance of AI PCs, such as Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm, is also intensifying.
At CES 2025, which opened on the 7th (local time), global PC corporations are presenting 'AI PCs' as their flagship products, establishing a new standard in the laptop market. An industry official noted, 'The concept of 'AI PCs' was unfamiliar to consumers until last year, but this year AI technology has become the standard that influences purchasing decisions for laptops,' adding that 'the effectiveness of AI features will determine the performance of PC manufacturers this year.'
◇ Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, AI PC usability increases… Dell and HP also unveil new products
Samsung Electronics has newly launched the 'Galaxy Book5 Pro,' which features an 'AI Select' function that allows users to quickly search for images or text without entering separate search terms. While watching YouTube on the laptop screen, if a user finds something intriguing, they can select the 'AI Select' option on the touchscreen to receive related search results.
LG Electronics has also focused on enhancing user convenience in laptop operations. They have applied a 'Time Travel' feature that allows AI to save users' work histories and to recover data in the event of unexpected laptop shutdowns. These AI features have been included in the '2025 model LG Gram lineup' unveiled ahead of CES.
HP, Dell, and Asus have also introduced a range of new AI PC products. HP unveiled the AI PC EliteBook series 'Ultra G1i,' Dell presented the newly revamped business AI PC 'Dell Pro Laptop,' and Asus launched its first AI business laptop 'ExpertBook.'
◇ Competition heats up in the AI PC processor market… Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm in a three-way battle
Amid fierce competition between Intel and AMD in the processor market that governs AI performance for AI PCs, Qualcomm, a latecomer, is accelerating its strategy to target niche markets. Intel, the leader in the central processing unit (CPU) market, announced the Core Ultra 200 vPro, which boasts about double the performance of the neural processing unit (NPU) that influences AI and machine learning tasks compared to its predecessor, ahead of CES 2025. They aim to enhance their market dominance by launching a new AI PC product within about six months. David Peng, vice president of Intel's Client Computing Group, remarked, 'The Core Ultra 200 vPro processor has enhanced AI performance and security features.'
AMD, which is trailing Intel, also announced new Ryzen series processors for AI PCs, emphasizing the superior AI computation performance of its processors. Jack Huynh, senior vice president of AMD, stated during his keynote speech at CES 2025 on the 6th (local time), 'The Ryzen AI 7 350 processor achieved better NPU performance than comparable Intel and Qualcomm processors,' adding that 'the 3D rendering performance of the Ryzen AI Max surpasses that of the Apple MacBook M4 Pro.'
Qualcomm won an innovation award at CES 2025 for its AI PC processor 'Snapdragon 8 Elite' and unveiled its fourth new Snapdragon X series processor targeting the mid-range AI PC market. Qualcomm chips are set to be integrated into copilot plus PCs priced around $600 (approximately 870,000 won) and will be supplied to major PC manufacturers including Asus, Acer, Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo.
