Samsung Display will showcase the world's first 27-inch quantum dot (QD)-organic light-emitting diode (OLED) monitor with UHD (3840x2160) resolution.
Samsung Display noted on the 6th that it will unveil two new QD-OLED monitor products equipped with the highest specifications at the world's largest IT exhibition, CES 2025, which opens in Las Vegas, U.S., on the 7th (local time). The 27-inch UHD (240Hz) product is the world's first self-emitting gaming monitor, and the 27-inch 500Hz (QHD) product boasts the highest refresh rate at the same resolution.
Global manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics, Asus, and MSI have recently unveiled their major monitor lineups for this year and announced the launch of new products equipped with the said panels. Samsung Display plans to begin mass production of both products in earnest during the first half of the year.
The 27-inch UHD panel developed by Samsung Display features a pixel density of 160 PPI (Pixels Per Inch), offering sharp image quality that is difficult to find in existing 27-inch products. Compared to the 31.5-inch UHD product developed just one year ago, both products offer UHD resolution, but the 27-inch product has a higher PPI and clearer image quality than the 31.5-inch (140 PPI) due to the difference in screen size.
A Samsung Display official said, "The higher the PPI, the clearer the screen when enlarging text or images, and it enables detailed work in photo editing or video production. In particular, it provides a vivid immersive experience when watching movies or playing games."
The 27-inch QHD (2560x1440) product showcased alongside it boasts a refresh rate of 500Hz, claiming the highest refresh rate among currently available self-emitting monitors. It does not fall behind compared to LCD monitors. Although 25-inch and 27-inch LCD monitors supporting a 500Hz refresh rate appeared since 2022, their image quality was limited to FHD (1920x1080) resolution. Especially when high refresh rate monitors meet the inherent characteristics of self-emitting displays, such as fast response times (around 0.03ms), screen transitions are faster, allowing for a much smoother experience when watching fast-paced games or sports videos.
Jeong Yong-wook, head of strategic marketing at the Large Display Division (executive director), noted, "27 inches account for more than a quarter of the overall monitor market, and the popularity of 27-inch gaming monitors is rising rapidly. With the addition of high resolution and high refresh rate specifications preferred by consumers, it will create a significant impact in the gaming monitor market."
Meanwhile, Samsung Display plans to showcase a variety of monitor lineups, including the 31.5-inch UHD and 49-inch dual QHD (5120x1440) models, meeting with customers at this year's CES 2025.
