LG Electronics announced on the 17th that it is fully opening the application programming interface (API) of its smart home platform LG ThinQ to support the implementation of smart spaces easily with LG Electronics products.
Recently, LG Electronics launched the LG Smart Solution API Developer website, officially opening the API of LG ThinQ. The API serves as a type of digital consolidation that enables data exchange and shared functions between different software. Developers can utilize the open ThinQ API to bring various LG Electronics product data and functions into their programs or systems to create new services.
The ThinQ API is composed of the ThinQ API for personal users and the ThinQ Business API for corporations. This allows for remote control and integrated consolidation of LG Electronics products installed in homes and buildings.
The personal ThinQ API supports the control and monitoring of appliances registered in the LG ThinQ app across various smart home platforms. By utilizing the ThinQ API, users can easily configure a customized smart home tailored to their lifestyle. For instance, users of the global smart home platform Home Assistant can now link and control a total of 26 types of LG appliances, including refrigerators and washing machines, in their existing smart home environment through the open ThinQ API. Home Assistant is a community-based open platform with approximately 1 million users worldwide participating in the development of various smart home features, including device automation and function expansion.
The ThinQ Business API enables partners who operate office and residential buildings to integrate and manage a variety of LG Electronics products, from appliances to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and digital signage, through existing apps. By utilizing the ThinQ Business API, residents can reserve the use of LG washing machines and dryers located in common areas via the building management app. Building managers can easily detect anomalous conditions in the building through integration with LG Electronics humidity and temperature sensors, allowing for rapid response through alert features if issues arise.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics is accelerating the integration of external products and services into the LG ThinQ platform by acquiring the smart home platform company AtHome, known for its extensive IoT device consolidation capabilities. AtHome's smart home hub, Homey, currently connects over 50,000 appliances and IoT devices, and the AtHome App Store features more than 1,000 apps that connect and control products and services from global brands such as Philips and Aqara.
LG Electronics plans to integrate AtHome's extensive open ecosystem and IoT device consolidation into its AI home hub, LG ThinQ On, aiming to realize an AI home that understands customers and provides optimal spatial solutions through generative AI. Kim Geon-woo, Senior Vice President of LG Electronics' HS Platform Business Center, noted, "By officially opening the ThinQ API, we will expand collaboration with various smart home power users and B2B operators, enhancing support to implement optimized smart spaces using LG Electronics products."
