The web novel platform MOPIC started a contest featuring a 'martial law' theme but quickly withdrew and apologized within a day due to the ensuing criticism.
On the 17th, MOPIC stated through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, “We apologize to everyone who expressed concerns and criticisms about the ‘martial law’ contest posted yesterday.” It added, “We sincerely apologize for causing worry due to our insufficient consideration and approach, despite the need to treat the state of emergency martial law with caution and seriousness.”
Previously, MOPIC announced a web novel contest on the theme of martial law with the phrase, ‘Is there a hotter theme than the recent martial law?’ The prize money was 500,000 won for first place, 300,000 won for second place, and 100,000 won each for third place and special awards.
However, after the announcement of the contest, as criticism from internet users intensified, the post was deleted, and MOPIC announced it would strengthen its internal review procedures.
MOPIC stated, “There was a lack of thorough review regarding the planning and expression methods, and we deeply reflect on the fact that we treated the historical event of martial law lightly.”
It continued, “We will establish guidelines for evaluating contest themes and undergo procedures to review their historical and social significance. We plan to operate internal feedback channels to gather opinions in advance.”
