Six out of 10 people enjoy gaming, and more than 90% of gamers use mobile games.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency, 59.9% (5,988 people) of 10,000 citizens surveyed in the '2024 Game User Survey' reported having had gaming experiences in the past year. This is a decrease of 3 percentage points from last year (62.9%). The gaming usage rates were 70.5% in 2020, 71.3% in 2021, and 74.4% in 2022, marking a two-year consecutive decline.
In a separate survey conducted with 8,000 game users, 91.7% of respondents reported using mobile games, an increase of 7.1 percentage points from last year. The console game usage rate also increased by 2.6 percentage points to 26.7% compared to last year. In contrast, the PC game usage rate decreased by 7.2 percentage points to 53.8%.
The average daily gaming time is 171 minutes on weekdays and 253 minutes on weekends, each up by 12 minutes from last year. While the average daily gaming time for PC and mobile games increased, the console game time decreased.
In this year’s survey, a new question regarding indie game usage found that 28% of respondents have experience using indie games. Indie games refer to those created by individuals or small groups with low budgets.
Reasons for playing indie games include the game concepts being light and convenient (54.4%), fresh themes (49.3%), simple controls (34.8%), and short play times (22%).
This survey was conducted from June 25 to October 8 to verify the gaming usage status of citizens. The survey on citizen gaming usage targeted 10,000 general citizens, while detailed gaming usage was assessed with 8,000 gamers. The margin of error is ±1.0 percentage points at a confidence level of 95%.
