Elon Musk, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla, has made the latest AI chatbot Grok-2 from his artificial intelligence (AI) corporations xAI available for free on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
On the 14th (local time), xAI announced on its X account that it has started offering Grok-2 for free on X. The company noted, "Grok is now free for everyone," adding that the tool is "faster, sharper, and includes a completely new image generator."
Users of X can access the Grok-2 page by tapping the Grok icon on the menu bar and can interact with the chatbot through a chat window that says, "Ask anything." However, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, there are usage limits. Free users can ask up to 10 questions every 2 hours.
xAI initially launched Grok-2 in mid-August, but limited access to subscribers of X's premium service, which costs $7 per month. Now, by offering the service for free, it has significantly expanded the user base.
xAI explained that Grok-2's performance has been greatly improved over previous versions. xAI stated, "Since the launch of Grok-2 in August, we have worked to enhance its performance, adding new features such as web search, citations, and the recently added image generator Aurora," noting that it is "three times faster (than the previous version), with improved accuracy and multilingual capabilities."
Musk participated in the founding of OpenAI in 2015 but resigned from the board in 2018 and disposed of all his equity in the company. After OpenAI launched ChatGPT, he criticized the chatbot as politically biased and spreading false information, establishing the AI development startup xAI in July of last year as a countermeasure.
