Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang disclosed a call with U.S. President Donald Trump. In the call, Trump again called the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) a "scam," referring to the recently surging argument in the AI industry to slow AI development.
On the 14th (local time), Bloomberg reported that Huang took a phone call from Trump, who was scheduled to join a panel at the All-In Summit held in Los Angeles (LA), and put it on speakerphone so the audience could hear.
In the call, Trump said moves to slow AI development were driven by political motives or a Chinese plot. Huang agreed, saying Trump had penetrated the complex nature of the issue.
Trump said, "It fits exactly the intentions of people who do not want AI to advance," adding, "This could include political figures, and China may be involved."
He then criticized U.S. states that do not grant permits for new data center construction. Trump said, "Data centers are like oil for the next 20 to 25 years," adding, "It is bigger than the internet." He added that because AI data centers are essential for creating national wealth, he would never allow construction to be halted.
While dismissing the idea of AI risk, Huang nevertheless praised Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who recently resigned over concerns about those risks. He said Coxon bravely voiced his concerns and that organizations should take whistleblowers seriously. However, Huang pointed out that such fear is creating a false either-or frame between rapid innovation and AI safety.
On the 12th, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei proposed slowing the pace of AI development in a lengthy post. After that, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk voiced support.
