U.S. President Donald Trump drew a line against calls to slow the pace of artificial intelligence (AI) development or tighten regulations. He said the current pace should be maintained to stay ahead in the AI tech supremacy race with China.
On the 13th (local time), during a visit to Ireland, President Trump met with reporters at his Doonbeg golf course and, regarding calls within the AI industry to slow down, said, "Because the side that wins the AI race is the winner, I want to keep this approach."
Trump assessed that the United States is currently ahead of China in AI.
He said, "We are ahead of China in AI," adding, "We are the most technologically advanced country in the world."
He did not completely rule out safety issues stemming from AI development. Trump explained, "We can put in safeguards and take various measures."
Even so, he took a negative view of some concerns that AI could slip beyond human control.
He said, "There are too many negative forces highlighting things that will not happen," suggesting that AI risks are being overstated.
Recently, voices within the global AI industry have grown louder for slowing development and strengthening safety verification. Some researchers at Anthropic and Google have warned that AI could, in the long term, escape human control, and Anthropic Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dario Amodei and others have also argued for the need to modulate the pace of AI development.
Trump's latest remarks are seen as signaling that, despite such industry warnings, the U.S. government intends to maintain its stance of accelerating AI development.
Trump reiterated that "the person who wins in AI becomes the winner," emphasizing again that maintaining an edge in the technology race is a core task for the United States.
