Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, was said on the 8th (local time) to have spoken with U.S. President Donald Trump for about an hour.
According to Russia's RIA Novosti and other outlets, Yury Ushakov, the Kremlin foreign policy aide, said at a briefing that the two leaders spoke for about an hour that day and noted it was a constructive and very candid conversation.
Ushakov said the two leaders exchanged views on the results of visits to Russia and Ukraine on the 5th–6th by Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's elder son-in-law Jared Kushner, and assessed them positively.
He added that Putin told Kushner, in effect, that "Russia does not have aggressive plans toward Europe."
Trump was said to have said that ending the conflict in Ukraine would open the way to restoring bilateral relations, and that restoring trade relations between the United States and Russia would yield enormous benefits for both sides.
In response, Putin supported Trump's intention to build a constructive partnership between the two countries, Ushakov said.
Ushakov said the two leaders agreed to continue the exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine and to stay in touch, speaking immediately whenever necessary.
