With the whereabouts of nine Koreans unconfirmed after flooding in Nepal, Minister Cho Hyun of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked the Nepal government for active support in search and rescue.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 6th, Minister Cho, who is visiting Nepal, held talks that day with Nepal Foreign Minister Sishir Khanal and expressed condolences over the flood damage. Cho then asked for the Nepal government's special attention and support for the nine missing Koreans.
The two sides discussed the status of on-site search and rescue of victims, the Nepal government's efforts to deal with the damage, and ways the Korea government can provide support.
Minister Cho said the Korea government dispatched the Korea Disaster Relief Team (KDRT), equipped with search, rescue, and forensic equipment, at Nepal's request. The KDRT is working with Nepalese authorities to conduct search and rescue operations for the missing.
The Korea government also plans to provide in-kind aid worth 130 million won and $1 million in humanitarian assistance through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Minister Khanal expressed appreciation for the Korea government's support.
The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation on the international stage to respond to climate change and to communicate closely for the search and rescue of the missing and the early return to daily life for the people of Nepal.
Minister Cho has been visiting Nepal since on the 5th to review the search status for the missing Koreans and encourage KDRT members.
The KDRT on the day also searched tunnels and a powerhouse near a weir dam where the missing Koreans are believed to be. The team visited a Nepal Army unit in Batar and, at the request of Nepalese authorities, delivered 262 body recovery bags.
