U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed Chinese President Xi Jinping's plan to visit the United States on the 24th. Trump said he would hold a state dinner for Xi and his wife, underscoring the friendly ties between the U.S. and Chinese leaders.
On the 4th (local time), after signing an executive order at the White House, Trump told reporters, "President Xi is coming on Sept. 24," adding, "We are looking forward to that visit."
He also noted that Xi is scheduled to visit the U.S. with his wife, Peng Liyuan. Trump said, "President Xi is a fine gentleman," adding, "I have a very good relationship with him."
On U.S.-China relations, he emphasized that the two countries are competitors while trade between them is proceeding smoothly. He added that during the visit by Xi and his wife, a state dinner will be held and that the United States and China will "accomplish great things."
He also offered his longstanding criticism of China. Arguing that past U.S. leaders were taken advantage of by China, Trump said, "China has taken advantage of us for a long time." He repeatedly claimed that ties with China have improved since his inauguration.
If the talks take place as scheduled, the in-person summit between Trump and Xi will come about four months after Trump's state visit to Beijing in May.
Ahead of the summit, a high-level meeting between the United States and China is also planned for mid-month. Reuters, citing sources, reported that the two countries are preparing talks to discuss risks related to artificial intelligence (AI) safety.
On the U.S. side, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to lead the talks. On the Chinese side, Vice Premier He Lifeng, who has overseen economic and trade negotiations with the United States, or Ding Xuexiang, a member of the Communist Party of China Politburo Standing Committee and vice premier of the State Council, is being mentioned as a possible participant.
Responding to AI-enabled cyberattacks is also expected to be a key agenda item. The United States has reportedly proposed that the two countries' AI research institutes adopt voluntary safeguards to prevent cyberattacks and share related information with China.
The United States is also wary of China's development of advanced AI models. In particular, it is concerned about the possibility that a Chinese AI model comparable to the high-performance model of U.S. AI corporations Anthropic could emerge, and it is reportedly planning to raise allegations that China has illegally copied proprietary AI models of U.S. companies.
