After Ukraine signaled an expansion of airstrikes against Russia, Russia said it would launch large-scale strikes targeting Ukraine's energy facilities.
The Ministry of National Defense of Russia said on the 30th (local time), "We have begun preparations for large-scale airstrikes targeting Ukraine's energy facilities," adding it was "a response to the Kyiv regime's continued attacks on Russia's civilian infrastructure and the fuel and energy sector."
Russia also carried out airstrikes the previous night against Ukraine's defense industry companies. At least 37 people were reported killed in the process. The Ministry of National Defense of Russia claimed it struck a cement plant in Kyiv that had been used as an explosives storage site for Smart Ammunition, a corporations producing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, drones) and munitions.
Russia's announcement is seen as a response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying on the 28th that he would increase the intensity of airstrikes against Russia.
In a speech at the time, President Zelensky said, "Right now we are carrying out more than 300 long-range strikes a day on average, and we need to increase that," adding, "The goal is to operate 1,000 long-range drones every day."
Regarding recent concentrated strikes by Ukrainian forces on Russia's energy infrastructure such as refineries, he warned, "For the first time in its history, Russia is importing gasoline," and "If Russia does not reasonably discuss ending the war, it will suffer greater losses."
