It is estimated that up to about 7 trillion won will be needed to repair the massive flood damage in Nepal.
Reuters reported on the 29th (local time) that Swarnim Wagle, Nepal Minister of Finance, said on the 26th that $4 billion to $5 billion (about 5.5 trillion to 6.9 trillion won) would likely be needed to repair the massive flood damage in the northern Bagmati Province area.
The maximum estimate of $5 billion is about 10% of Nepal's gross domestic product (GDP). However, Minister Wagle said the estimate was calculated at an early stage.
In an interview with Reuters, Wagle said, "It will require much less money than the 2015 Nepal earthquake," while noting, "We are currently assessing the extent of losses and damage."
In 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal, killing about 9,000 people and damaging 1 million buildings. Reuters said that the repair expense at the time was about $9 billion (about 12.4 trillion won).
Meanwhile, as of the day of reporting, 626 people have died and 2,426 are missing due to the floods. On the same day, in Gyirong County, Rikaze City, Tibet Autonomous Region, China, which borders Nepal, seven people died and 554 are missing in debris flows linked to the floods. Combined, deaths in Nepal and China total 633, with 2,980 missing.
