Police opened an investigation after men in work clothes were captured repeatedly emerging from a manhole in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, New York.
A recent TikTok video shows three men wearing one-piece coveralls and headlamps looking around as they climb out of a manhole. The poster said the video was filmed at about 4:19 a.m. on the 18th (local time) near Penn Station in Manhattan.
It was not confirmed what they were doing in the underground facility in the early morning. As the video spread, curiosity and unease have grown locally over who they are.
In New York in May, people in similar outfits were also spotted coming out of sewers in areas including Brooklyn, prompting a police search. Even though an emergency response team was deployed at the time, no circumstances suggesting a direct threat to the public or suspicious items were found.
A New York City inspection also found no particular damage to sewer facilities. The New York Police Department (NYPD) said on the 24th that it is aware of the incident and is actively investigating, and that no one has been arrested so far.
