Chile will close its embassy in Iran at the end of this month.
Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on the 22nd (local time) that it will "end the work and activities of the Chilean Embassy in Iran as of Aug. 31 this year." The ministry said the move is an organizational overhaul to allocate diplomatic resources efficiently and a preventive measure to ensure the personal safety of diplomats amid instability in the Middle East.
At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that "this embassy closure does not mean a break in diplomatic relations between the two countries." Consular services for Chileans in Iran will be transferred to the Chilean Consulate in Ankara, Türkiye.
Earlier, due to worsening conditions in the Middle East and changing security and economic conditions in Iran, other Latin American countries such as Mexico and Uruguay also closed their embassies in Iran or withdrew diplomatic staff.
